Project background
Completion of primary education is one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). In an effort to achieve this goal, the Cambodian government is now developing and strengthening its primary education in an attempt to rebuild the education system that was ravaged by the civil war in the 1970s. Primary school attendance is 90.1%, and that of secondary school attendance is a mere 8.1%. Moreover, as the age of the students increases, so does the educational gap between genders ? 6.6% of girls attend secondary school, 2.9% lower than the figure for boys.
Issue areas
The main barriers hindering girlsf school attendance are: poverty, preoccupation that girls are indispensable for housework, lack of understanding about the importance of girlsf education among parents and the general community. In addition to these social constraints, flooding of low-lying areas surrounding the Mekong River hampers travelling to school.
Project Objective
The project aims to create a more supporting environment for school ? aged gilrs to access educational opportunities, or for them to continue schooling, by improving the understanding, interest and support for girlfs education amongst families, schools and the community.
Main activities
`The participation and empowerment of locals`

Provision of educational opportunities for girls
Targeting girls from poor families who are in upper primary school, the age most prone to leaving school, the project reduces the cost of education through scholarship schemes and support to students staying at dormitories. CARE provides educational opportunities outside of school, such as literacy classes for girls who were unable to continue schooling or who have never attended school.

Promoting changes in the social structure and the perception and treatment of girlsf education within the communities
In order to foster understanding of, and interest in education, CARE organises workshops and other programmes to increase the awareness of the local community. To ensure that a change in perception leads to a change in behaviour, the communities have taken up the issue of girlsf education, have developed ways to address them, and are drafting plans for their implementation. Moreover, we encourage systemic changes through the inclusion of girlsf education into the development plans of the regional administration. |
