Having worked in translation and taught English on the JET Programme, I was ready to broaden my horizons. I went in search of NGO volunteer opportunities last summer and came across CARE International Japan. I was really pleased to receive a quick and friendly response and was very happy to help out at the Global Festival last year.
The two days I spent with CIJ staff and volunteers at the festival booth filled me with inspiration and increased my desire to further support CIJ and learn more about their vital project work throughout Asia.
My next encounter with CIJ was when I helped translate a proposal for the After TEA project in Sri Lanka. Soon after I was pleased to have the chance to attend a presentation in Harajuku by Cader, the Sri Lankan TEA project staff member featured in the last newsletter. The evening was very interesting and brought the whole project to life for me. Wishing to further understand the behind the scenes work of CIJ I asked spend time alongside the staff.
I have now just completed two months of volunteering at the office. My time there included supporting the Photo Tapestry Activity, researching fundraising ideas, selling Asian goods at a charity event and translating JICA documents. I am really hoping that with the future launch of CIJ’s English web pages that more foreigners will take up the great opportunity to not only learn about CIJ but also to support and have fun raising money for CIJ projects. My time with CIJ taught me a lot and I am really hoping to put everything I have learnt and experienced with CIJ to good use in my future career.

翻訳やJETプログラムでの英語教師などの仕事を経て、さらに視野を広げたいと感じていた頃でした。NGOでボランティア活動をする機会を探していた去年の夏、ケア・インターナショナル ジャパンと出会いました。問い合わせに対して迅速でとても親切な返答をもらい、昨年のグローバルフェスタJAPAN2005にてCAREの活動に参加できることになり、とても嬉しく思いました。
グローバルフェスタのCAREブースで、スタッフやボランティアさんたちと共に過ごした２日間。このときの体験に触発され、ケア・インターナショナル ジャパンがアジアにおいて実施している素晴らしい活動についてさらに学び、今後も応援し続けていきたい、という気持ちが高まりました。
それから再度、CAREの活動に関わることになったのは、スリランカにおいて「After TEAプロジェクト」を実施するための申請書を翻訳する業務においてです。翻訳作業を始めてからまもない頃、幸いにも、前回のニュースレターで紹介されたスリランカ人のTEA プロジェクトスタッフ、Caderさんによる報告会に参加する機会もありました。報告会はとても興味深く、プロジェクト全体がよく理解できて、身近に感じられました。CIJの活動のもっと深い部分をさらに知りたいと思い、私は、スタッフのそばで働くことを希望しました。
そして今、２カ月間の事務局でのボランティア活動をちょうど終えたところです。この２カ月間、事務局で私が行ってきたことは、スリランカにおける「フォト・タペストリーアクティビティ」関連業務、ファンドレージング手法に関する調査、チャリティーバザーにおける民芸品の販売、JICA提出書類の翻訳など、多岐にわたりました。将来、ケア・インターナショナル ジャパンの英語のホームページを立ち上げることにより、もっと多くの外国人がこの団体について知るすばらしい機会を得るだけでなく、楽しみながらプロジェクト実施のための資金集めの部分でサポートしてくれればいいな、と思います。
CAREで過ごした時間の中で、私は本当に多くのことを学びました。ここで学んだこと、経験したことのすべてを、今後の私の人生において役立てていきたいと思います。
