The Nepal Rastriya Secondary School in Birendranagar, Surkhet District, Nepal, which we support, has 362 students in grades 1 through 12, ages 5-16, 82 (22%) belonging to marginalized Dalit and indigenous communities. Being the only school in Birendranagar, most students commute two hours to school.

The school has seven school buildings consisting of 14 rooms, two of which are not in use because they are unsafe. The school had begun constructing a two-room building in the past (the foundation and roof are complete), but due to a lack of resources and funding, students have been forced to study in classrooms without walls.

In April 2024, EGAO Co., Ltd., a supporter of this project, and our staff visited Nepal to inspect the school. It was the dry season in Nepal in April when we visited, and it was hard to imagine how difficult it must have been for children to learn in classrooms without walls as the wind blew intense and dusty in the mountainous areas.

The photo below shows the school building with the exterior walls completed, creating an environment where children can concentrate on their studies. 

In addition, the school's toilets, which had no water storage tanks and running water, are currently being renovated. Toilets designed with girls in mind will be completed soon. It is expected to reduce the number of girls who stop attending school and drop out because of toilets.

In the future, we will open a library with books and teaching materials to create an environment where boys and girls can receive quality education without distinction.

We will also educate people to change social customs and old lore related to menstruation, including violence and discrimination against girls.
