【Newsletter topic】Floods hit Bangladesh, and CARE's disaster prevention and mitigation measures
Bangladesh is one of the most flood-prone countries in the world.
According to a study, as of 2016, 25% to 30% of land is inundated during the monsoon season, resulting in a loss of 1.5% of GDP or an average of US$2.2 billion.
The floods that hit northeastern Bangladesh in 2022 affected more than 7 million people in nine districts. Among them, the mental health and lives of women and girls were put at risk due to anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by the death of family members and the collapse of their homes, as well as domestic violence due to economic deprivation.
Early action against flooding can save lives and protect resources and communities.
This is why CARE is implementing" SUFAL," an expanded action and learning program based on flood forecasting in Bangladesh, starting in 2019.
Through this program, CARE promotes strengthening governance systems and the capacity of the government, local Disaster Management Committees (DMCs), and communities. Based on past damage and other information, CARE strengthened flood preparedness in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River Basin, establishing an early warning system and providing associated financial support.
In addition to distributing food and hygiene kits to the flood victims, we also repaired and installed wells in upland areas to provide safe drinking water.
